Today, in
Oklahoma, more than 400,000 adults can't
read. That number represents more than 20 percent of our state's
adult population.
And
it's a wake up call for all of us.
Of
course, there are people trying to help.
Across
the state more than 80
different literacy programs work to address our state's illiteracy
rate.
The
problem is, not enough people know about these programs and services.
In
2003, the Metropolitan Library
System, the Oklahoma
Department of Libraries, the Oklahoma
Library Association and many others joined together to help
raise awareness of our state's literacy problems and the programs
designed to help them.
We
call our campaign "Read Y'all."
And,
no, it's not another literacy initiative.
Read
Y'all is a marketing campaign designed to make Oklahomans aware
of the need for literacy tutors and volunteers, to make sure people
understand our state's literacy programs, and to promote reading
throughout Oklahoma.
To
find out more, investigate our literacy links,
and contact your local literacy program to find out how you can
help. To find the programs near you, use
